Gum Disease

Comprehensive oral health includes more than just your teeth! We want to give you the tools you need to keep your gums, as well as your teeth, healthy and pain-free. Gum disease is a common ailment that affects many adults, but with the right information and treatment, you can keep your gums healthy and happy!

WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?

Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease. This disease affects the structures that support and protect your teeth.

When a thin film of bacteria known as plaque builds up on your gums, it can lead to infection and gum irritation.

This plaque builds up a little every day but can generally be kept in check by good brushing and flossing habits. Make sure you incorporate flossing into your daily routine, especially after meals that include foods that get stuck in your teeth.

If plaque begins to get out of hand, it can lead to gum disease. Plaque buildup can also harden into tartar, which can cause further inflammation and other symptoms of gum disease. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Bleeding.

  • Swollen gums.

  • Receding gums.

  • Loose teeth.

  • Persistent bad breath.

  • Dental abscess.

  • Changes in your bite.

Whether you’re experiencing gingivitis or advanced stages of periodontal disease, we can help you treat your gums and get on the road to recovery!

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT GUM DISEASE?

The two stages of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis.

GINGIVITIS

If you’re experiencing gingivitis, the first symptoms will often be swollen, painful gums, bleeding when you floss, or chronic bad breath. This early stage of periodontal disease is easily reversible with a thorough cleaning at your dentist’s office.

You can keep gingivitis at bay once you have started implementing better oral hygiene habits. Biannual cleanings can also keep your gums healthy by regularly removing the plaque and tartar that cause gum disease.

PERIODONTITIS

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of periodontal disease. This particular stage of gum disease can have much more serious consequences, including receding gums, tooth loss, and even loss of bone in the jaw. You should always contact a professional if you’re dealing with periodontitis.

Periodontal disease that has reached this stage is considered a dental emergency. Professional assistance may be able to help you save your teeth as well as the bone density in your jaw, which is why we encourage you to contact our office if you notice any gum disease symptoms.
